Lago di Tovel | W130
A jewel of the Adamello Brenta Natural Park
In the homeland of the brown bear lies Lake Tovel: it is absolutely worth a visit, armed with a camera to “capture” the uniqueness of a place that is quite rich in terms of flora and fauna.
Even today, although the phenomenon no longer occurs, Lake Tovel is known for the unique appearance of red coloration in the world. Until the mid-sixties, a special type of algae appeared on the surface during the summer months, causing the lake to turn a bright red color. To explain this extraordinary phenomenon, mysterious stories and legends arose, such as that of Queen Tresenga.
Today Lake Tovel is considered one of the naturalistic jewels of the Adamello Brenta Natural Park. A visit there means to fully enjoy the contact with nature: the nearest town is Tuenno, at a distance of 14 km.
The walk around the lake takes about an hour and a half, but there are many other routes available in the area. Between 1999 and 2002 the brown bear was reintroduced here. Dedicated to the symbolic figure of the park is the visitor center “Casa del Parco Lago Rosso”, located near the lake and designed in collaboration with MUSE: an opportunity to see texts, photos, films and replicas that convey the charm of this place.
