The Geier-Kn\u00f6ttl and its wonderful view<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Geier-Kn\u00f6ttl lies on the nature trail towards Lake Kaltern. It stands firm as a rock. It offers a wonderful view of the valley and the autumnal landscape. The dense forest gives way to rolling vineyards, the colours shifting from green to golden yellow in the glint of the low-hanging sun. A pleasant, almost romantic atmosphere emerges, with a clear view stretching far across the valley. Incidentally, the \u2018Kn\u00f6ttl\u2019 (a \u2018Knottn\u2019 means rock in South Tyrolean dialect) is an ideal take-off and landing spot for birds of prey, hence the name \u2018Geier-Kn\u00f6ttl\u2019.

The story of the South Tyrolean apple<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Covering an area of 18,400 hectares, South Tyrol is Europe\u2019s largest contiguous fruit-growing region. Around 7,000 farming families grow top-quality apples on fertile soil, enjoying 300 days of sunshine a year. Once a week, the tourist office organises an apple tour where you can learn all about apples, complete with an apple quiz and tastings of apples and apple juice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flow trails with stunning views of the lake<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Altenburger Round<\/a> is an easy ride with gentle climbs and flowing trails. The route takes you along country lanes to Lake Kaltern and on to Kaltern. From there, it continues uphill to the Mendelbahn valley station and follows the high-altitude hiking trail and the Rotwand forest track via Ziegelstadel to Altenburg. Along the route, you\u2019ll pass a lovely viewpoint with a fountain, where you\u2019ll have a superb view of Lake Caldaro. Stop for a photo and carry on to the Waldschenke. After a refreshment stop, head back to the M\u00fcller Eck (entrance to the Rastenbach Gorge). For the descent, take the Friedensweg towards Kaltern and then the Kardatscher Weg down to Lake Caldaro. From there, follow the lakeside circular trail through the apple orchards to Termeno.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aromas along the Kurtatscher Wine Trail<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Kurtatscher Wine Trail<\/a> is the oldest wine trail in South Tyrol. Along the 2.1 km route, you\u2019ll learn about all the key events in the wine-growing year. Various information points provide interesting facts about viticulture, the landscape and the history of the South Tyrolean Unterland. Along the way, you\u2019ll have the chance to guess the aromas of the wines wafting from small amphorae. You\u2019ll also be rewarded with plenty of beautiful views.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

On the Rotwandlerknot, high above the rooftops of Termeno<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Above Tramin, in the middle of the steep Bannwald forest, you can spot a flag on a rock. It is fixed to the Rotwandlerknot (we\u2019d already learnt that the word \u2018Knottn\u2019 means \u2018rock\u2019 in South Tyrolean). From here, you have a truly unique view of Tramin and can enjoy the peace and quiet to the full. This little vantage point can be reached via a forest path and a forest trail. Please note: it is a rather exposed rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The castle hike in the Appiano Castle Triangle<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At the foot of the Gantkofel (a mountain near Appiano) lies the Appiano Castle Triangle<\/a>. On this varied castle walk, you\u2019ll get a taste of \u2018medieval South Tyrol\u2019. On the walk, you\u2019ll first reach Hocheppan Castle, one of South Tyrol\u2019s most important defensive structures. The castle has a tavern serving excellent food, which you shouldn\u2019t miss. The walk then continues to the ruins of Boymont Castle. A little further down lies Korb Castle, which dates back to the Romanesque period and marks the end of the castle walk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In St. Josef on Lake Kaltern, we recommend stopping off at the Dominikus Winery. A truly breathtaking cellar, hewn out of the rock by the owner himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether you\u2019re sitting on the wooden benches on the sun terrace or in a deckchair, the Waldschenke in Altenburg is a lovely place to while away a little time. What\u2019s more, the local cuisine is absolutely delicious. You really must try the hearty Nockentris or the sweet Kaiserschmarren! \ud83d\ude09
